A GLIMPSE OF AFRICA: A DREAM TURNING INTO AN ENTERPRISE
November 16, 2019 – h18:00 – Casa Emergency
In the heart of Nairobi, Amref Italia created the Dagoretti Center in 2001 to support children who live abandoned in the dumps of the slum. The recovery of street children in the Dagoretti center has always occurred through arts, Pinocchio Nero’s theater and the percussions of the Juakali Drummers. In this context, a participatory video school was also created. Since then, it has already taught dozens of former street children how to narrate their world through a camera.
Jackson Ogonda is Dagoretti Centre Director. Thanks to a project funded by Amref Italia and Fondazione Aurora, with the contribution of Amref Kenya, Jackson is preparing to direct the social enterprise “Dagoretti Film Center” which will provide video-making services to offer a new opportunity for children and teenagers.
He talk with Tommy Kuti, an Afro-Italian rapper and writer who has collaborated with Paola Zukar, Fabri Fibra and the label Universal. Tommy will offer a cross section of his life between Nigeria, Italy and England and he will also delve into themes such as multiculturalism and the representation of other.
Through this event, Amref Italia and Fondazione Aurora want to open up to those who own the right to narrate their experiences and who can offer a glimpse from a different perspective.
